The Boy Scouts of America were founded in 1910 by a Chicago publisher named W.D. Boyce and at first were managed by the YMCA. At that time there were three competing Scouting Organizations in America. The American Boy Scouts, the New England Boy Scouts and the aforementioned Boy Scouts of America. This was the official magazine of the Boy Scouts of America.
In 1911, George S. Barton, of Somerville, Massachusetts founded and published the first issue of Boy's Life Magazine. In 1912, The Boy Scouts of America purchased Boys Life from Barton for $1 per subscription or approximately $6000. At that point, Boys Life became the official magazine of the Boy Scouts of America and, American Boy Scouts: Plays and Pastimes ceased publication. As you can see, this magazine is pretty hard to find. Not only were not many copies printed, but the amazing illustrations by C.H. Lawrence were very popular as pieces of art. The oversize, 10" x 12" dimensions made for beautiful displays in boys rooms for over 100 years. This copy is available for purchase here
