This is a very affordable but painterly impressionist painting probably from western Pennsylvania or eastern Ohio c. 1930's. It is 24" x 30", signed verso Joseph Leukhard and is available for purchase here

Portrait of Emile Albert Gruppe (1896-1978)

Great portrait of Emile Gruppe by one of his students E. Bushnell. It is 18 x 24 sight size in its original period frame. It also has brass plaque that reads First Prize Meriden Conn. 1981

Portraits of famous artists are really cool and this one sure is. No damage at all and not dirty either. Smoke free home. Titled "Emile" on stretcher. Gruppe's paintings are often seen in major auction galleries, such as Sotheby's, Christies, and Skinners. Auction prices have risen steadily and exceed most Rockport School artists. Gruppe is among the most prominent of Rockport, MA artists, a group that that includes: Anthony Thieme, Marguerite Pierson, Antonio Cirino, W Lester Stevens, and Aldro Hibbard.

Ernest Frederick Meyer, American, 1863-1952

Another 2014 highlight was the acquisition and sale of this nice painting by Ernest Frederick Meyer. It is titled "Young White Birch Tree Grove". It was 20 x 16 and retained its original frame.

A nice surprise was a delightful title, small sketch and inscription verso. Painted near William Gillette Castle (Hartford, Connecticut).

From Schwarz Gallery in Philadelphia is this bio:

Ernest Frederick Meyer studied painting in New York City with James Carroll Beckwith, Frank Vincent Dumond, John Henry  Twachtman and with William Merritt Chase at the latters Tenth Street studio. One of his classmates there was Reynolds Beal who painted Meyers portrait. However, it was Chases instruction in landscape painting at the Shinnecock Summer School of Art on Long Island that gave Meyer his start as a painter of landscapes, for which he became known. Best know today are his views of the Connecticut countryside. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Boston Art Club. He was a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts and the Salmagundi Club.

We found the painting in northwestern Iowa and placed it with a collector near Dallas. We are always interested in buying paintings of this quality.

We sold this painting to a collector in Cincinnati which may be a clue as to who painted it. We like selling and cant keep everything but we kind of hated to let this one go without finding out more about it. That happens sometimes in this business. It is really a great picture. By the way, we love buying paintings like this too.
